Early Monitoring Makes a Difference

Children's eyes continue to grow throughout childhood, and for many, that means their nearsightedness progresses year after year. While glasses help children see clearly, they do not slow the changes happening inside the eye.

Tracking small changes over time helps us determine when myopia management may benefit your child and which treatment approach is most appropriate. A single eye exam captures a snapshot—ongoing monitoring reveals the pattern.

Small Changes Are Easy to Miss

Children rarely notice when their vision changes because those changes often happen gradually.

Parents may begin noticing that their child is:

  • Squinting to see distant objects
  • Sitting closer to the television
  • Complaining that the classroom board looks blurry
  • Holding books or devices close to their face
  • Requiring stronger glasses more frequently
  • Struggling to see clearly during sports or other activities

Routine pediatric eye exams help identify these changes early, often before children realize their vision has changed.

Nearsightedness Changes More Than Vision

Myopia, or nearsightedness, develops as the eye grows longer than it should.

As the eye continues to lengthen, distance vision becomes blurrier, often requiring stronger prescriptions over time. While updated glasses improve vision, they do not change the way the eye is growing.

Myopia management focuses on slowing that progression while helping children continue seeing clearly throughout childhood.

Glasses Help Children See. Myopia Management Helps Protect Their Vision.

A stronger prescription is not simply a sign that your child needs new glasses.

It may also indicate that their eyes continue to grow longer. Higher levels of myopia are associated with an increased lifetime risk of certain eye conditions, which is why slowing progression during childhood can play an important role in protecting long-term eye health.

The goal of myopia management is not to eliminate myopia. It is to reduce how quickly it progresses while your child's eyes are still developing.

MiSight® Contact Lenses

MiSight® 1-day lenses are FDA-approved soft daily disposable contacts that provide clear daytime vision while working to slow myopia progression in age-appropriate children.

Unlike standard contact lenses, MiSight® uses ActivControl® Technology with alternating treatment and correction zones. Children wear them during the day and discard them each night—no cleaning, no storage, and no compromise on clear vision.

Clinical trials showed MiSight® slowed myopia progression by an average of 59% compared to standard single-vision lenses.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

Ortho-k lenses are worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea while your child sleeps, allowing many children to enjoy clear vision throughout the day without glasses or daytime contacts.

Beyond the convenience of going glasses-free, ortho-k plays an active role in slowing myopia progression. By altering the peripheral focus of light entering the eye, ortho-k lenses may reduce the stimulus that drives eye elongation—the underlying cause of worsening nearsightedness.

Ortho-k is a particularly popular choice for active children who find daytime contacts or glasses inconvenient.

Stellest® Lenses

Stellest® spectacle lenses combine everyday vision correction with H.A.L.T. (Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target) technology—a constellation of lenslets that create a volume of defocus signal in front of the retina to help slow eye elongation.

Stellest® lenses look and feel like ordinary glasses but work differently. For children who prefer frames over contact lenses, Stellest® offers a way to stay in glasses while still benefiting from an active myopia management strategy.

Find Out if Myopia Management Is Right for Your Child

Not every child with nearsightedness needs the same approach. A myopia consultation helps us evaluate how your child's eyes are changing and whether treatments such as MiSight®, Ortho-K, or Stellest® lenses may help slow progression.

The myopia management program at Lauren Alexander Vision Source is led by Dr. Quang Vu, whose clinical focus includes orthokeratology, MiSight®, Stellest® lenses, and scleral lens fittings. Dr. Vu works with families at both our Shavano Park and Potranco locations to develop personalized treatment plans designed to protect your child's long-term vision.
